How fencers are ranked and selected for GBR representation

Fencers are ranked by category (Cadet, Junior, and Senior), weapon (foil, epee, or sabre) and gender.

Rankings are calculated from ranking points earned in competitions. The number of points earned depends on the strength of the competition as well as the fencer's placing.

Please note: Selection dates on the calendar refer to the cut off date for rankings for specific internationals, not the date the selection will definitely be published.  The list of selected fencers will be produced as soon as possible after this date.

Junior Selection Policy 2016-2017 29.07.2016

Changes to the Junior Selection Policy document 2016-2017

1. Following a performance and safeguarding review, to be selected for a junior international competition a fencer has to be 16 at the date of the competition.  The only exception will be if selected by the PD in consultation with the Lead Talent Coach(es).

2. We have revised the number of fencers that can be selected from 12 to nine to manage and control costs for those selected.  If we get to a stage where a weapon has more than nine fencers who can put in a credible performance then we will review this number.

3. Any athlete wishing to be selected for Great Britain at FIE or EFC competitions must compete in the National Championships in the relevant category – Cadet, Junior or Senior.  Only in exceptional circumstances will an exemption be granted, which must be sought in advance and have received written approval of the Performance Director.  In the event an athlete is unexpectedly injured or ill a doctor’s note will be required to be submitted to Head Office within one week of the date of the Championships.

The only exception would be if an athlete does not have British Nationality at the point of the National Championships but subsequently receives British Nationality.
