Top eight finishes for Matricciani & Pocknell in Modling

Men’s Individual

Fifteen British fencers took part in this Austrian event at the weekend in a huge field of one hundred and seventy-six.  Noah Matricciani and Joe Pocknell were the star players as both went on to achieve quarterfinal places. 

Matricicani came through two rounds of poules undefeated as Pocknell dropped one fight in each round.  Both secured byes through the round of 256.  Pocknell made the round of eight by beating Wintergoller (GER) 15-4, Le Maitre (GBR) 15-4, Baaken (HUN) 15-10 and Solomon (USA) 15-13.  Meanwhile, Matricciani progressed to the quarterfinals by beating Koti (HUN) 15-13, Mateev (ISL) 15-10, Bivins III (USA) 15-14 and Andrews (AUS) 15-10.  Both British fencers went out to the eventual finalists.  Pocknell lost 15-14 to Schickele (FRA) and Matricciani went out 15-9 to Dolegiewicz (USA).

Florian Schickele (FRA) beat Filip Dolegiewicz (USA) to take the title as Matei Aniculoesei (ROU) and Sebastien Patrice (FRA) collected the bronze medals.

Drew Thronley fought hard to make the top twelve, James Edwards and Bertie Holdsworth made the 32, Barnaby Halliwell, Zachary Klein and Alex Le Maitre made the 64, whilst Ian Ren, William Jolley, Luke Haynes, Mark Alvares-Peres, Thomas Woodland and Samuel Boorne got to the 128 and Gabriel Van Hoffelen made the 256.

Women’s Individual

It was a tougher day for the British women’s contingent in Austria.  Maia Fashokun got the best result by making the round of 64.  Sophia Potter, Phoebe Haslegrave, Lizzie Moffat and Elise Llewellyn made the round of 128, whilst Ellen Robbins Wilkinson, Grace Grimshaw, Lumeng Yang, Annabel Eastwood, Catriona Thomson, Aneesah Khan and Olivia Dunn did not make it through the two rounds of poules.

Lise Gette (GER) won the tournament, beating Keli Izenson (USA) in the final.  Julika Funke (GER) and Kara Linder (USA) shared the bronze medals.

Cadet Women’s Foil – Poznan

Eight British fencers lined up in field of one hundred and fifty-eight in Poland at the weekend.  Mirren Black achieved the best result by making the round of 32.  She came through the poule round with four victories from six fights and went on to beat Cichola (POL) 15-4 and Hardie (GBR) 15-6 to make the round of 32.  Repechage was employed in this round but Black lost 15-10 to Hajas (HUN) and 15-9 to Saveanu (ROU) thus going out.  Heloise Hardie, Bronwen Granville and Emily Beardmore made the 64, Amanda Mond, Sophie Peake and Rhiannon Hales got to the 128, whilst Alice Watson was eliminated from the poules.

Nora Hajas (HUN) won the event, beating Yana Andreyenka (BLR) in the final as Rebeca Candescu (ROU) and Oliwia Szabelska (POL) collected bronze.

In the team event Great Britain (Beardmore, Hales & Hardie) went out 43-21 to San Francisco Fencers Club.  The Belarus A Team won the event, beating AZS AWF Poznan in the final.  The bronze medal went to Poland.

Cadet Women’s Epee – Bratislava

Three British fencers took part in this event.  Both Ariana Farmanfarmaian and Yasmin Al-Wagga were eliminated after the poules stage.  Katy Miles progressed to the knock out stages but lost 15-6 to Gwozdz (POL).  Dar Hecht (ISR) won the event, beating Outi Jaakkola (FIN) in the final.  Lili Buki (HUN) and Greta Candreva (USA) were the bronze medalists.

Cadet Men’s Epee – Bratislava

Three more British fencers took part in the men's epee event.  David Farmanfarmaian did not make the first round cut but Tarriq Roach and Ethan Kew did.  Roach went on to beat Dayioglu (TUR) 15-6 before losing 15-10 to Mecke (USA) in the round of 128.  Kew won his 256 round fight 15-12 over Koshman (UKR) before going out 15-2 in the next round to Volak (CZE).  Ryan Griffiths (USA) beat his teammate Theodore Lombardo in the final as Anton Chmut (USA) and Soma Cseri (HUN) collected the bronze medals.

Cadet Men’s Foil – Bratislava

Matthew Abrahams was Britain's sole representative in this event.  He made it through the poule stage but then lost 15-7 to Li (CRO) in the round of 128.  Leo Li went on the share the bronze medal position with Baptiste Archibaud (FRA) whilst Rafael Savin (FRA) beat teammate Jules Andriamapianina to take the title.
