29th May 2012
It's been just over a week now since our EGM, and time to give some reflections on the Board's behalf.
For the record, Keith our President chaired the meeting, I led the discussion about our proposed amendments to the British Fencing Articles on behalf of the Board. Nine (out of ten) Board Directors were present, with eighteen members. From the outset I proposed that we adjourned decisions on our proposals, as I'd become convinced from recent Roadshows, meetings and phone calls that at least a significant minority of members wanted more time and debate on the issues. A motion to that effect was carried easily and we then had an amicable but animated discussion of each of the key amendments. The EGM agreed that the Board's proposals will now be subject to further consultation before being brought back to the AGM to be held in early October.
I stated at the meeting that both I and the Board remained committed to the changes proposed, but we would listen carefully to the membership in the next few weeks, review our proposals and make any appropriate amends. We shall also endeavour to communicate them better!
It would not be right to use this space now to repeat the Board's case for change, save to say that we believe much is at stake. I'd urge all members to take part in the next phase of consultation, by attending meetings and Roadshows and by writing to me or phoning. We shall advertise details of meetings and Roadshows soon - I made a start in Chichester last Saturday (many thanks to Maggie and Simon for the invite!).
