Truro based fencer Will Deary finishes sixth in Hungary
Will Deary, 15, made the final at the Godollo Cadet International sabre event in Hungary on 7th October 2012. He came through a field of 178 fencers in this European Cadet Circuit competition.
The event started with two rounds of poules with Deary winning all six of his first round matches dropping only one of his second round matches. This earned him a bye through to the round of 64 where he faced the Hungarian number one Cadet fencer, Balint Kossuth. He battled through winning 15-13. In the round of 32 he took on Bogdan Platonov (UKR) and squeezed through 15-14 finishing the fight with two well-timed parry ripostes. Platonov moved into the repecharge. Deary finished his round of 16 fight against Nick Herbon (GER) more comfortably 15-10 and then took out Ilya Nokhrin (RUS) 15-13 in the round of 12 to make the final. There he faced Platonov (UKR) again but the Ukrainian got the better of him, winning 15-9. Platonov went on to win the tournament. Jonah Shainberg (USA) took the silver medal with Viktor Habony (HUN) and Edward Chin (USA) taking the bronze medals.
Deary, now ranked 27th in Europe, commented after the event: “I was really pleased with the improvement in my performance. I know I can go further and will be aiming to make the podium this season.”
Chris Buxton and Jon Salfield coach him. Buxton added: “Will has worked very hard on his game in the run-up to this season and this a good marker to lay down for the forthcoming qualifying events for the World Championships. With another year in the age group Will is clearly capable of excellent results at this level and we’ll be looking for major championship medals in the future.”
The European Cadet Circuit continues this weekend with 12 British men and 12 British women sabreurs heading to Meylan, France.
