Following requests from athletes, parents and coaches we have taken the decision to share the existing publicly available data on athletes representing GBR that is collated and analysed to support decision making within the Athlete Development Programme.
This includes selection decisions and decisions around supporting accelerated progression through the pathway (eg giving cadets opportunities to compete in Juniors).
One set of data collates by athlete: the event details, number of poule fights, hits scored in poules, hits received in poules, poule result indicator (hits scored minus hits received), number of 1 point losses (eg 5-4), whether the athletes was promoted to the direct elimination (DE) stage, whether they received a bye, the number of DE fights they fenced, the number they won, the resultant % DE bout wins and the final DE score.
Athletes representing GBR can personally submit this data to BF after they compete using an online form (if you are an athlete and do not have the link please click here to request it is sent to you).
When an athlete submits their own performance data, they have the opportunity to provide their own comments on their performance which will not be published. These comments are taken into account by selectors and reviewed by the Weapon Leads as part of their roles in supporting athletes in updating and actioning their IDPs. There is another form being developed for athletes to feedback on team performances.
The colours indicate the % finishing position range which can be cross referenced with BF Pathway Standards and the standards set out in the GBR Selection Policy and used as indicators for season planning.
Patterns of results can be used to indicate the appropriateness of the competition to fencer development stage
There are other metrics and indicators that can be derived from this data and used by athletes, coaches and parents to review performance. Other selection indicators can also be derived – average % finish of best three performances (relevant nominated events only) and indicative single season (or as the data set is expanded on, multi season) trajectory. Our intention is to share more of this data over time to support athlete conversations and decision-making.
The ADP will be providing training sessions to athletes and coaches (particularly those in T1-T2) to help them understand how they can manage and analyse their own data and use this to inform their personal decisions around competition selection.
By publishing this data BF also intend to give athletes the opportunity to correct any data that has been incorrectly submitted or transcribed from publicly available online resources.
DATA SETS
As a reminder all this data is available publicly and taken from online results published by the FIE and EFC through their own websites and website such as fencingtimelive and engarde-service.
