The Matthew Dickinson Memorial Trophy is presented to the epee fencers finishing at #1 in the GBR Cadet and Junior Rankings at the end of the season.
Sofia Gerhardt – number one ranked Cadet Women’s Epee
Sophie Peat – number one ranked Junior Women’s Epee
Tristan Lumineau – number one ranked Cadet Men’s Epee
Cador Beautyman – number one ranked Junior Men’s Epee
The trophies were donated in memory of Matthew Dickinson, a member of the Cadet and Junior GBR fencing team from 2014 to 2018.
Dickinson passed away on Sunday 26th April 2020 aged 20. In his career he became the youngest winner of the U23 National Championships, and represented GBR at European and World Championship level.
The trophies in his name are presented yearly to the top ranked epee fencers within the Cadet and Junior circuits. Virginia Bailey, British Fencing’s Participation Director, presented them to the athletes at the 2024 Cadet and Junior National Championships.
Sophie Peat won the trophy as the number one ranked athlete for Junior Women’s Epee, but was not at the championships and will be presented with the award at a later date.
On receiving the news of winning the trophy Sophie said:
“I am very happy to have received this award. I have enjoyed my last junior season a lot, it has enabled me to hone my skills through experiencing different opponents. I’m excited to carry on my fencing journey through to seniors.”
After being awarded the trophy Sofia Gerhardt said:
“I am honoured to receive this award and hope that Matthew’s passion for fencing continues to inspire many other fencers who, like him, simply love fencing. These trophies are his legacy.”
Tristan Lumineau said:
“I was awarded the Matthew Dickinson Trophy last year too, so winning the award twice in a row is quite nice. The trophy is worth a lot and is quite prestigious. It feels good.”
Cador Beautyman, on receiving the award, said:
“I was very pleased to receive this award, it’s great to have some recognition for all the hard work that went into last season, but when I found out the story behind this beautiful trophy, I was very touched by it and it makes receiving it even more special.”
