2024 BF HONOURS: JANET MILNER

As nominations open for the 2025 BF Honours, we’re shining a spotlight on last year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Janet Milner, who received a Silver Medal for many years of volunteering at BF events.

Tell us a little about the work you do to support fencing.

Over the years I have volunteered at numerous BF events covering county, regional, national and international competitions. I tend to be involved at the beginning of an event at check-in and then again at the end with the medal presentation ceremonies. In between, I work to support DT, field of play and elsewhere as needed.

What’s your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?

There are so many memories that spring to mind over the years. However, a recent favourite involved the Cardiff Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in January this year. I had to attach lanyards to the innovative Welsh slate medals which in  number of instances proved impossible as the hole drilled in the slate for this purpose was too small. To the amusement of my BF colleagues I unpicked the lanyard stitching, threaded the ribbon through the hole and hand sewed them back again using dental floss which was the only thing available. I am pleased to say that it worked!

What does it mean to receive the 2024 BF Honours award?

I am extremely honoured to receive the award. It was totally unexpected and although I am very grateful I do feel somewhat unworthy when I read through the list of previous recipients. All I do is turn up at the venue and enjoy making my contribution to the smooth running of the competition. This involves working with my BF friends, other volunteers, coaches, parents and importantly the athletes, many of whom I will have seen over the years moving from youth competitions to a national and often an international level.

What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?

Do get involved. It is a wonderful opportunity to support and enable athletes to progress their careers from grassroots to representing their country. This involves working with and learning from a whole range of people who are expert in their individual  areas. It is also fun! I look forward the 2025 BF events.
