As nominations open for the 2025 BF Honours, we’re shining a spotlight on last year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Marcia Stretch, who received a Silver Medal for a lifelong voluntary contribution to fencing.
Tell us a little about the work you do to support fencing.
I started fencing in 6th form at school, and joined Salle Froechlen in Hammersmith when working at J.Lyons. I joined British Veterans at its inception and have been a member ever since. I was head of Cadet and U20 Women’s Foil national teams and also Men’s Cadet Sabre team, and travelled all over Europe driving minibus to competitions. I also went to two Cadet World Championships with the teams. I qualified as a referee in foil and travelled with the British Veterans to referee at World Championships. I have also been Secretary for Southside Fencing Club, Kingston Fencing Club, Surrey Fencing Union and British Veterans Fencing.
What’s your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?
I think some of the best times were with the teenagers taking them to international competitions and World Championships – great time and lots of fun.
What does it mean to receive the 2024 BF Honours award?
Absolutely delighted to be awarded a Silver Medal in appreciation of my work.
What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?
For those sports that receive little funding, volunteers are crucial. Have a go and enjoy and make lots of friends.
If you know a BF member that has made a significant contribution to fencing in Britain whilst upholding our values of honesty, respect and excellence, why not nominate them for this year’s BF Honours award?
Nominations close on the 30th May 2025.
