As nominations open for the 2025 BF Honours, we’re shining a spotlight on last year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Sue Brooks, who received a Silver Medal for volunteer services to fencing at all levels including GBR selection.
Tell us a little about the work you do to support fencing.
Currently my volunteering is spread widely across all aspects of fencing. From grass roots at club level to National teams and everything in between.
What’s your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?
I have had many special volunteering moments but I suppose the best of these would be as Team Administrator for England Fencing as I got to go to the Senior Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in 1998. Being there to support the fencers and officials by making sure everything went smoothly. This was very gratifying as the team got impressive results across the board with England finishing top of the points table and winning the Wilkinson Sword Trophy.
What does it mean to receive the 2024 BF Honours award?
I am very humbled to receive this award of a Silver Medal from the British Fencing Honours Committee. It will encourage me to continue volunteering at whatever level I can as I get older.
What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?
If someone is thinking of volunteering, I would strongly suggest they try it. Start small, do not bite off more than you can chew. Then if you like it, you can spread your wings and volunteer for bigger roles.
If you know a BF member that has made a significant contribution to fencing in Britain whilst upholding our values of honesty, respect and excellence, why not nominate them for this year’s BF Honours award?
Nominations close on the 30th May 2025.
