Report from the final Epee Grand Prix of the season

The final Epee Grand Prix of the season took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Men’s Epee

One hundred and ninety-one fencers took part in this event but there were no British entries.  Yannick Borel (FRA) took the title beating Max Heinzer (SUI) 15-10 in the final.  The bronze medals were awarded to Christoph Kneip (GER) and Radoslav Zawrotniak (POL).  Notably, at the end of the season, six different French fencers won one of the eight major events.

Women’s Epee

In the women’s event, Mary Cohen, Corinna Lawrence and Abbi Matthews were in a field of one hundred and sixty-four fencers.  All three made it through the first round – Cohen V3D2, Lawrence V3D3 and Matthews V3D3.

In the first of two preliminary matches Lawrence beat Buech (SUI) 15-8 but Cohen lost 15-5 to Yepes Molina (CRC) and Guy (CAN) beat Matthews 15-11.  Lawrence made the round of 64 beating Campbell (USA) 15-11.  She faced world number seven, Simon Gherman (ROU) but lost a tight match 8-4 on time in a non-combativity priority minute.

In an event where none of the world top twenty-five made the semi-final stage, world number fifty-seven, Francesca Boscarelli (ITA) won the title beating world number seventy-six, Coraline Vitalis (FRA) 15-9 in the final.  The bronze medals went to Kelly Hurley (USA) and Yiwen Sun (CHN).

GB individual placings:  Lawrence 60th, Cohen 99th  & Matthews 103rd.
