FIE Referee Seminar and Exam Update

British Fencing is pleased to confirm that the FIE has agreed to hold an additional referee seminar and exam at the Eden Cup, 15-16 December, 2016.  This will be for foil only and, as host country, we are able to submit a maximum of two candidates.  If one of those candidates is female, we will be allowed to enter one additional candidate.

British Fencing has therefore selected the only two referees that have achieved the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) C level qualification – Dan Hazelwood and Chris Lennon.  (See latest news here for more detail.)

Further FIE seminars and exams are planned for all three weapons at the Junior Europeans Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, 28 February – 9 March, 2017.  It is possible that there will be an additional three-weapon seminar and exam later in the season but we are still awaiting confirmation of that.

British Fencing will be able to submit one candidate per weapon to each exam and will be able to submit one extra candidate (any weapon) if any of the candidates are female.  This means the maximum number of candidates for each exam will be four.

With the introduction of the new EFC category C licence, in future, priority will be given to candidates who have achieved this qualification.  For 2017, referees without a current C category licence should try to ensure that they are refereeing in at least three EFC circuit events prior to an exam date.

At this point in time we would like any referee who wishes to be considered for either exam in 2017 to notify Head Office.  Formal applications will not be required until later but at this stage we would like to ensure that we have sufficient potential candidates for each weapon.
