Following an amount of feedback about the timing of the Cadet and Junior Championships in July conflicting with the end of the exam period and summer holiday’s we would like to propose moving this event.
After discussions with the Talent Pathway team they feel that the Championships would be better placed during the main domestic season i.e September – December.
Based on venue availability and other events British Fencing are proposing to move the Championships to the 8th and 9th September 2018 at the David Ross Sports Village in Nottingham. We will work with competition organisers and selectors to ensure that this does not clash with any nominated events in the 2018/19 season.
As this is a significant change we are consulting with athletes, parents and coaches and would welcome your views on the change.
September provides the best opportunity to avoid clashes with the FIE and EFC Junior and Cadet calendars. These calendars are not typically confirmed until May/June, and by that time (even if a suitable free weekend is identifiable) it is too late to secure suitable venues which often need to be booked up to 12 months in advance.
Further, being at the beginning of the season supports more fully the training programme of athletes, providing a highly competitive experience in the run-up to the first Internationals.
Should the consensus be to keep the event in July the proposed date for the Championships would be 21st and 22nd July 2018 at the David Ross Sports Village in Nottingham.
