British Fencing will be hosting a Coach Development week in Plymouth in August 2019. The week will include training for fencing coaches with different levels of experience as well as UK Coaching’s Safeguarding and Protecting of Children course.
The timetable includes the 2 day Introduction to Coaching Fencing course, which gives an entry point for novice coaches to the British Fencing Coaching Framework. Previous candidate Katie Miller from Epsom provided positive feedback around the content and delivery, “Rhys was probably the best tutor I had ever encountered on a training course such as this. He had a very empathetic approach and managed to address all the various levels of experience within the group. I really enjoyed the course. Having started with a fairly apprehensive attitude to fencing, I left feeling that I wanted to gain more knowledge & experience in order to fulfil my role as a coach.”
Other courses available include Coaching Fencing Levels 2 and Level 3, designed for coaches who want to develop their coaching or specialise in one of the three fencing weapons, Sabre, Epee or Foil. The level 2 course spans 4 days and the Level 3 course offers 5 days of coaching over the week.
The week has been developed as a response to requests for more coaching development opportunities in the South West region and is taking place at Plymouth College, an important venue for fencing in the area. Steve Kemp from British Fencing said, “The coaching week has worked very successfully in other regions, the competency-based approach allows the coaches to share their developments over the week, which can create a richer learning and development environment for everyone involved. We also lucky to have a team of Coach Developers that have such a depth of knowledge and experience of fencing and coaching to contribute to the week.
Coaches who qualify with British Fencing are entered onto the British Fencing Coach Register and are eligible for piste-side accreditations to support their fencers at British Fencing events.
The week will also include delivery of the UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting of Children (SPC) course at Plymouth College on August 20th* An essential prerequisite for all Coaches, Team Managers and Welfare Officers, the course provides information to anyone working with children in a sporting context looking at legislation, best practice and how to deal with safeguarding concerns.
*As part of British Fencing’s commitment to safeguarding the SPC course is open to delegates from any sport. Members of British Fencing are eligible for a discount on the SPC course. Membership to British Fencing is free for 90 days and is available here: JOIN BRITISH FENCING
