Outdoor Fencing Guidelines (Wales)

Welsh Fencing announces resumption of adapted outdoor fencing activity in Wales.

For full details and a link to a template risk assessment please see the Welsh Fencing website.

Following the Welsh First Minister’s recent announcement on the recommencement of organised outdoor activities, Welsh Fencing has been working with Sport Wales to support the resumption of more meaningful fencing activity.

Outdoor activities are now permitted in Wales, but only for those under 18 (or persons who were aged under 18 on 31 August 2020).

Outdoor Fencing activities (delivered by affiliated clubs/registered coaches to members) should be restricted to the following, maintaining 2m distance unless performing a fencing action and rapidly returning to a 2m distance:

  • Traditional 1:1 lessons
  • Group lessons
  • Partnered lessons.

Within these circumstances and the additional risks involved, the following activities ARE NOT PERMITTED:

  • Sparring
  • Close quarter
  • Corps a corps
  • Fleche / Flunge

Before commencing activities the following must be in place:

  • Club COVID Officers
  • Risk Assessments
  • A robust registration, and track & trace system

Clubs and coaches should also refer to the Welsh Government guidance on return to sporting activities. Guidance on space, numbers etc is available here: https://gov.wales/organised-childrens-outdoor-activity-frequently-asked-questions.
