BF is pleased to announce the appointment of members to the new Medical Committee to assist the BF Chief Medical Officer with all fencing-related medical matters.
Following expressions of interest from the fencing community (see news post here), the individuals listed below have been appointed by BF to the Medical Committee.
The Medical Committee’s outputs, which include advising on, gathering information on and educating around injury and illness within fencing activity, are outlined here.
Gareth Bashir is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon who was a Welsh and GBR international sabreur, now fencing again. EFC Medical Commission Member (2013-2017), advanced trauma life support instructor, ASGBI emergency surgery steering group member, UKAD accredited educator.
Saskia Blair is a Physiotherapist and is fairly new to epee (with two epeeist daughters), who competed for GB and Wales in Judo and for Wales A as a rugby international. Her extensive experience includes GB Fencing, (2003 – 2008); Team Wales physio for 4 Commonwealth Games; Team GB 2004 Chief Physio Barcelona Holding Camp, Chief Physio UK School Games (2006-2013); GB canoeing; Welsh Judo and the LTA. Saskia provides medical cover at fencing competitions and works with clubs on injury prevention exercises and stretches.
Lindsey Bottoms is an exercise physiologist and epeeist. Currently Head of the Centre for Research in Psychology and Sports Science at the University of Hertfordshire, she has published research extensively in the area of fencing.
Paediatrician and GB international epeeist. BF Board Director from 2021 EFC Medical Commission member from 2018.
General Practitioner, epeeist, coach and referee. Senior men’s epee ranking coordinator since 2003. Stephen has carried out roles at many levels from club armourer to regional captain.
General Practitioner and ex-Olympic foilist; BF Chief Medical and Anti-Doping Officer; Board Director 2013-2021; FIE Medical Commission member 2005-2021
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, occasional fencer and (as a parent) a regular supporter at fencing competitions across England, Wales and Scotland. Peter brings expertise in injury management and return to sport to the committee and is keen to develop strategies to reduce avoidable injuries during fencing training and competition, and also identify health benefits associated with regular fencing.
