Cheremisinov defeats Rosowsky on his way to victory
Today Husayn Rosowsky, 22, from Sheffield and representing the University of Greenwich, finished a commendable sixth in the men’s foil individual event at the World University Games 2013 in Kazan, Russia.
Rosowsky came out of the first round poule with four victories from six bouts having impressively beaten, world number 48, Garozzo (ITA). He then went on to beat Tony Helissey (FRA) 15-14, Li (CHN) 15-13 and Hatoel (ISR) 14-13 to make the quarterfinal. Standing in the way of a medal was world number three, Alexey Cheremisinov (RUS) and after a tight fight the Russian ran out a 15-10 winner.
After the event he posted the following on Twitter; “Just missed out on medals. L8 finish losing out to world number 3 but a good and much needed result.”
Cheremisinov went on to win the tournament beating Son (KOR) 15-10 in the gold medal match. The bronze medals went to two Italians, Garozzo and Luperi.
Marcus Mepstead (LSE) and Alex Tofalides (UCL) also took part in the event. Both started well dropping just two of their first round matches. In the round of 64 Mepstead beat Woo (USA) 15-11 and Tofalides knocked out Santos (POR) 15-4. They did not make it through the round of 32 though with Pogrebniak (UKR) beating Mepstead 15-11 and Onizawa knocking out Tofalides 15-7.
The three British fencers will compete again on Friday in the team event.
GB Placings: Rosowsky 6th, Tofalides 21st & Mepstead 23rd.
