JOHN PELLING  1936–2023

The 1960 Olympic medallist has died at the age of 88.

The GBR epeeist John Pelling, who has died aged 88, won a silver medal in the team épée event at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome alongside Allan Jay and Bill Hoskyns.

John was a member of the British World Championships and Olympics teams from 1957 to 1967. He also competed in the team event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Representing England, he won a gold medal and a silver medal in the épée events at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia. He repeated this success four years later at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Additionally, he was a two-time British fencing champion, securing the épée title at the British Fencing Championships in 1961 and 1965. He also was a member of the Men’s Epee team who secured the silver medal in the 1965 World Fencing Championships.

He was a member of the Grosvenor Fencing Club and, like his father, served as one of the GB Selectors and was a member of the Epée Club.
