Dimitri Coutya started his wheelchair fencing journey as a game option in school in 2009. He has dreamed of becoming a Paralympic athlete since.
Dimitri became the Paralympic Champion at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, winning the gold medal in the Individual Men’s Foil and also won the gold medal in the Individual Men’s Epee.
Dimitri also competed alongside Piers Gilliver and Oliver Lam-Watson for the Men’s Team Foil, taking home the silver medal.
The team also took home bronze for Men’s Team Epee.
Dimitri is the first British wheelchair fencer to be selected to fence in all three weapons – making Paralympics GB history.
Dimitri competed in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, where he claimed two individual bronzes and helped his teammates win silver and bronze in the Foil and Epee. He also competed in the 2016 Rio Paralympics at just 18 years old, finishing 5th in the Individual Men’s Epee and 7th in the Men’s Individual Foil.
He is the reigning European champion in both epee and foil for Category B fencers and has achieved world championship three times.
“Train like you are trying to achieve perfection, and if you think you have, you’re wrong. Ask the right questions, act on the answers and you might get a little closer to it”.
“There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you score a point. If you are an athlete, like me, you will most probably be able to relate to that rush of excitement that bursts from your heart.”
