BRITISH FENCING VETERAN ELECTED FELLOW OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY

Epeeist Eric Lauga has been elected to the Fellowship for 2024.

Eric Lauga, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and veteran epeeist, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society for 2024.

The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of sciences, is made up of many of the world’s most eminent scientists. Those elected are leaders in their scientific field and have made a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science.

Eric Lauga is an applied mathematician. He has been an academic since 2006, first at MIT and the University of California San Diego in the US, before moving to the University of Cambridge in 2013. His academic work consists of fundamental research in biological physics.

As an applied mathematician, Lauga’s research advances the understanding of natural phenomena through mathematical modelling. “Applied mathematicians use mathematical tools to predict, quantify and explain the behaviour of natural or man-made systems in our lives, from biology and materials to traffic flow, or anything else you can imagine that needs to be quantitatively understood,” he said.

Lauga expressed his gratitude to the BF community, extending his appreciation for fellow veteran fencers. He emphasised his appreciation of the warm welcome he received from the community after moving to the UK.

Here at BF, we want to extend our congratulations to him on this fantastic recognition and wish him all the luck for his future.
