German and Italian draped in Gold
The Cadet and Junior World Championships 2013 continued in Poreč, Croatia, with the start of the team events in Women’s Foil and Men’s Sabre.
Junior Women’s Foil
The USA took the first semi-final 45-30 against Canada as Italy defeated France 45-36 in the other semi. Canada started the bronze medal match well with Harvey opening up a 5-0 lead straight away against Tran. In the bronze medal match, Canada held the lead until the six leg when Mienville took the French level at 29-29 on time. Despite the Canadians taking the lead back in the seventh leg, France pulled away to win 45-41. The USA started well in the gold medal match but Italy led 25-24 at the end of the fifth leg. They never looked back and took the title 45-36.
Great Britain did not enter a team.
Junior Men’s Sabre
Great Britain fell 45-36 to Mexico in the round of 32 ending their hopes in this event. Italy squeezed passed Hungary 45-43 in the first semi-final whilst Germany powered 45-34 past USA in the second. After a close start Hungary pulled away from the USA in the bronze medal match going on to win 45-36. The gold medal match was one not to miss. Germany pulled away at the start and led 20-14 after four legs. Italy seemed to get back into the match before the Germans pulled out a 40-34 lead going into the last fight. There Curatolli (ITA) put in a stunning performance against Kindler with both fencers getting a red card for starting early. Kindler found his composure and despite the Italian scoring 9 hits took the title for Germany 45-43.
GB Placings 23rd.
The Junior team competition continue tomorrow with the Men’s and Women’s Epee events.
