The GBR Cadet Women’s Sabre team took a gold medal at the EFC U17 Circuit event in Istanbul on Sunday 10th November 2024, following Maya Sutton’s individual gold the previous day.
The team of Hui Xin Sezille, Maya Sutton, Emily Fereday and Kathryn Liu beat Turkey in the final, 45-37, after getting past France 3, France 1 and France 2 to make the final.
“We had such a great time today, and we fought through all of it as a team. We couldn’t have done it without our coaches and all the support from everyone here today.” said Fereday afterwards.
The gold followed a string of successes last year for a sabre team including Sezille and Sutton.
The previous day, Maya Sutton took individual gold atop a field of 157, beating Anna Kourousi of Greece 15-14 in the final.
“I’m really proud of myself, especially coming from the last three competitions which didn’t go so well. And I kept mentally strong, and I’m proud that I did that.”
“Thank you to Alex my coach, and to Bryn and Paul as well, and my sport psychologist Thomas.” she said.
Sezille made the last eight, having to fight her own teammate Sutton, and Liu the last 16.
The GB1 cadet men’s team of Joe Evans, Josh Bryden, Raphael Bedford and Alex Greene placed fourth, just missing out on a medal, at the same competition.
