Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact selection timeline for senior events this season?

According to the GBR Selection Timelines website, the announcement is typically made five working days after the selection point. However, it may take longer if selectors require additional information on the nominations.

What are the requirements for being nominated to join the GB fencing team?

You can view the selection policy here: GBR Selection Policy

Exactly how long will athletes have on Sport:80 to accept or decline selection places?

96 hours (four days) from when the invitation is sent.

Will declined selection places automatically go to the next person on Sport:80, or will it be done manually?

Declined spots will automatically be offered to the next athlete on the list.

Will there always be reserves listed on the selection announcement in case places are declined?

Yes, the list will be final for the acceptance of a place.

Could we get a clear breakdown of selection criteria for major championships? (U23 Euros, Senior Euros and Worlds) and what is necessary for improving the chances of being selected?

1. Attain the necessary qualifications to be considered for selection in a Major event.
2. The top three eligible fencers will be chosen if more than four athletes meet the qualification standards.
3. Ensure your performance data shows a positive trend according to trajectory modelling.
4. Examine the discretionary criteria outlined in the selection policy.
5. Develop a clear and demonstrable plan to enhance your performance.

What is the best way to improve a senior ranking and attain senior selection?

A fencer must be in the top eight of the BF rankings to be selected directly. The GBR Pathway Programme aims to provide opportunities to compete in World Cups, with those in the top 20 having a greater chance for selection. This depends on the performances of fencers ranked ninth and below. Understanding what is needed to secure a top eight position will help inform the competition plan and the necessary performances.

Where can I find the Satellite schedule for this coming fencing season?

The FIE Website
The BF Master Calendar

When should IADPs be sent in by athletes in order to be considered for major championships?

The primary focus of the Major Championships should be meeting the qualification standards, as selection is based on this process. Submissions must adhere to the discretionary timeline, which is two weeks before the selection point when the selection process begins. The IADP should be a live document that can be requested anytime.

What should you look for when choosing a competition to compete in?

Competitions should be suitable for your age and stage of development, offering opportunities to enhance your poule experience, strategies, and approach to DEs. The competition might be too challenging if your percentage finish is in the 80% range. Most personal coaches can provide insights into the strengths of various competitions. (Percentage finish is calculated as your finishing position divided by the number of fencers participating, multiplied by 100.)
