IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL FENCERS – INSURANCE & ACCIDENTS

A reminder that personal accident cover and public liability for individual fencers are only valid if they have a membership, free for the first 90 days. Without membership, fencers are only covered for their first taster session in an affiliated club.

There have been two accidents in fencing recently where, had the person injured been a BF member they would have been able to make a personal accident claim.

If an accident whilst fencing is caused by a non-member fencer, that fencer would not have any public liability protection through BF’s insurance cover.

Public liability protection covers a fencer’s legal liability should someone claim they have been injured or had their property damaged because of the that fencers fencing activities. Public liability claims can happen due to a variety of circumstances, although negligence is the main trigger.

As there is a free 90 day membership available the expectation is that affiliated clubs and coaches support all participants to sign-up for this.

There is only one situation where fencers are individually covered by BF’s insurance whilst participating in affiliated club activity through BF’s policy and that is:

Non-members who participate in a beginners’ course, taster session or similar introductory activity consisting of a single session of less than 3 hours duration of active participation by any individual non-member.“.

A further notice will follow in regards to the requirements of clubs to be covered by BF’s insurance policy – in the meantime:
