The final weekend of the senior international circuit was a full one with events in all six weapons across the globe.

Women’s Epee Grand Prix – Havana

There were 117 competitors in Havana, Cuba at the weekend including Great Britain’s Corinna Lawrence and Hannah Lawrence.

Corinna Lawrence (V4D2) made it through the first round but Hannah Lawrence (V1D5) did not.  Corinna then defeated Barvestad (SWE) 15-9 in the preliminary knockout stage to make the round of 64.  There she faced eventual silver medalist, Courtney Hurley (USA) and lost 15-7.

Hurley lost 15-14 to Jialu Hao (CHN) in the gold medal match as Simona Gherman (ROU) and Emese Szasz (HUN) settled for the bronze medals.

Men’s Epee World Cup – Buenos Aires

The 150 individual competitors in Argentina did not include any from Great Britain.  Bogdan Nikishin (UKR) won the gold medal beating Gauthier Grumier (FRA) 15-11 in the final whilst Silvio Fernandez (VEN) and Joerg Fiedler (GER) settled for the bronze medals.

Twenty-two teams competed in the final action in Buenos Aires on Sunday and France beat Russia 45-28 to take the gold medal as Hungary overcame the USA 45-36 for the bronze.

Women’s Foil Grand Prix – Marseille

Three British fencers joined a field of 94.  Catherine Cook (V1D4) and Catriona Sibert (V1D4) did not make the first round cut but Natalia Sheppard (V4D2) earned a bye straight through to the round of 64.  There she faced Knapek (HUN) who beat her 8-6.

Arianna Errigo (ITA) beat Inna Deriglazova (RUS) 15-14 to take the gold medal whilst two other Italians, Carolina Erba and Elisa Di Francisca completed the podium.

GB placings: Sheppard 45^th, Sibert 77^th & Cook 82^nd.

Men’s Foil World Cup – Havana

Four British fencers were part of the 128-man field in Cuba.  Davis had a bye straight through to the second day whilst Fitzgerald (V3D3), Kruse (V6D0) and Tofalides (V3D3) all made the first round cut – Kruse’s performance earning him a bye straight through to the second day.  In the preliminary knockout stages Haaster (CAN) defeated Fitzgerald 15-5 but Tofalides made it to the round of 64 beating Aurey (FRA) 15-7.

Only Kruse, who beat Brian Kaneshige (USA) 15-13, was able to progress further as Alexander Pivovarov (RUS) beat Davis 15-13 and Alexander Choupenitch (CZE) saw off Tofalides, 15-9.  Kruse went on to beat Johannes Poscharnig (AUT) 15-11 and Sebastian Bachmann (GER) 13-12, before losing 14-13 to Yuki Ota (JPN) in the quarterfinals.

Ota went on to take the silver medal, losing 15-5 to Dmitry Rigin (RUS) in the final.  Alexey Cheremisinov (RUS) and Enzo Lefort (FRA) took the bronze medals.

Seventeen entries to the team event included one from Great Britain.  A superb 45-32 victory over Ukraine in the round of 16 was followed by a 45-32 defeat against the USA.  In the placing matches Great Britain fell to Germany and then Japan, both 45-39, to finish eighth.  France beat Russia 45-38 to take the gold medal as the USA snatched the bronze medal from Italy with a 45-42 victory.

GB placings: Kruse 7^th, Davis 33^rd, Tofalides 53^rd & Fitzgerald 83^rd.

Women’s Sabre Grand Prix – Beijing

A field of 72 fencers took part in this event including Alice Watson for Great Britain.  She was only able to win two of her first round fights so did not make the cut.  Olga Kharlan (UKR) went on to win the gold medal beating Chen Shen (CHN) 15-7 in the final.  Charlotte Lembach (FRA) and Jiyeon Kim (KOR) were the losing semi-finalists so went home with the bronze medals.

GB Placing:  Watson 58^th.

Men’s Sabre Grand Prix – Plovdiv

Four British fencers were part of the field in Bulgaria.  James Honeybone (V4D1) and Soji Aiyenuro (V3D2) did enough to earn byes to the second day.  Alex Crutchet (V2D4) just missed the cut but Curtis Miller (V3D3) did make it.  In the preliminary knockout stage Miller lost 15-13 to Mikheil Mardaleishvili (GEO).  In the round of 64 Aiyenuro lost 15-8 to Luigi Miracco (ITA) but Honeybone progressed beating Mattias Willau (AUT) 15-11.  His day ended in the 32 to eventual winner Enrico Berre’ (ITA) 15-8.

Berre’ beat teammate Diego Occhiuzzi 15-6 in the gold medal match with Tiberiu Dolniceanu (ROU) and Junghwan Kim (KOR) taking the bronze medals.
