Ruaux and Corby Make Satellite Quarters

There were four senior international events featuring British fencers this weekend as the countdown to Rio 2016 continues.

Men’s Epee – Paris World Cup

Four British fencers lined up in a field of two hundred and eleven in Paris at the weekend.  Greg Allen and Nick Perry both notched up two victories from their six first round matches which was enough to qualify them for the preliminary knockout stages.  Christopher Rocks (V1D5) and Elliott Grover (V0D6) were eliminated from the poules.  A two-stage preliminary followed but neither Allen nor Perry could get through the first fight, losing 15-11 to Spautz (GER) and 15-7 to Boehm (GER), respectively.  Gauthier Grumier (FRA) won the gold medal match beating Pavel Sukhov (RUS) 15-11 in the final as Geza Imre (HUN) and Daniel Jerent (FRA) completed the podium in the bronze medal placing.

Great Britain did not enter the team event that featured twenty-two teams.  France lost out to Ukraine in the gold medal match in a tight final that finished 40-38.  Hungary defeated Israel 36-20 in the bronze medal match.

Women’s Epee – Legnano World Cup

Mary Cohen was Great Britain’s sole representative in a field of one hundred and fifty-six in Italy at the weekend.  One victory from six first round fights was not enough to secure progression in the tournament.  Erika Kirpu (EST) took the title beating Giulia Rizzi (ITA) 15-11 in the gold medal match.  Tatyana Andryushina (RUS) And Man Wai Vivian Kong (HKG) performed well to share the bronze medal position.

There was no British entry in to the team event as seventeen countries lined up on Sunday.  China came out on top beating Romania 35-29 in the final.  Kirpu picked up her second medal of the weekend as Estonia beat Korea 26-19 for the team bronze.

Women’s Foil – Tauberbischofsheim World Cup

Four British fencers entered this event but Rachael Kwok abandoned, leaving three in a field on one hundred and thirty-three.  Philippa Mullins and Katie Smith only registered one victory from six fights which was not enough to make it out of the poule stages.  Kate Beardmore managed two victories from six fights and did progress but fell in the first preliminary, 15-10 to Duchesne (FRA).  Inna Deriglazova (RUS) took the gold medal in a relatively comfortable 15-10 victory over Arianna Errigo (ITA).  Elisa Di Francisca (ITA) and Lee Kiefer (USA) picked up the bronze medals.

There was no British entry into the thirteen-strong field in the team event on Sunday.  It was no surprise to see Russia and Italy fighting for gold and it was Russia that stole the spoils, beating the Italians 45-37 in the final.  France beat the USA 45-40 for bronze.

Men’s Sabre – Reykjavik Satellite

Julian Ghosh was Britain’s only competitor in the field of nineteen who lined up in Iceland’s capital.  He managed two victories from six fights in the first and second poule stage which was enough to qualify him for the elimination stages.  He went out 15-5 to Jacob (IRL) in the round of 16.  Teddy Weller (ISV) beat Julian Ayala (MEX) 15-10 to the title as Gunnar Augustsson (ISL) and Jan-Ole Huelshoerster (GER) settled for the bronze medals.

Women’s Sabre – Reykjavik Satellite

Seven British fencers took part in the women’s event and all progressed through the first round – Jessica Corby (V4D1), Alexanra Davis (V1D4), Kate Daykin (V3D2), Sarah-Jane Hampson (V3D2), Bridget Pleasant (V3D2), Emily Ruaux (V3D2) and Letitia Steer (V3D2).  Steer stood out in the second round as she took four victories from five fights and was joined in the elimination stages by Corby, Davis, Daykin, Hampson and Ruaux who all scored three victories from five fights.  Pleasant (V0D5) did not progress.

All remaining Brits had a bye through the round of 32 but only Corby and Ruaux made the top eight where they lost 15-7 to Toledo (MEX) and 15-11 to Gonzalez (MEX), respectively.  Tania Arrayales (MEX) won the event beating Laia Vila (ESP) 15-8 in the final as Ursula Gonzalez (MEX) and Julietta Toledo (MEX) picked up the bronze medals.
