Deary breaks into 64 in Padua

Senior Men’s Sabre – Padua World Cup

A field of one hundred and ninety-one fencers took to the pistes in Italy at the weekend including ten from Britain.  Alex Crutchett (V4D2), Will Deary (V3D3), James Honeybone (V4D2), Stephen Rocks (V3D3) and Brynmor Saunders (V2D4) made it through the first round.  Jacob Gander Compton (V0D6), Curtis Miller (V0D6), Noah Rogerson (V2D4), Kirk Slankard (V2D4) and JJ Webb (V2D4) did not.  Only Deary and Honeybone made it through the first of two preliminary knockout fights, beating Samer (EGY) 15-12 and teammate, Saunders 15-6, respectively.  Valkai (HUN) beat Crutchett 15-13 and Laurence (FRA) beat Rocks 15-5.  Deary made the round of 64 by going on to beat Macheno (ESP) 15-10 but Honeybone fell 15-12 to Escudero (ESP).  Deary faced Szilagyi (HUN) on the second day of the event and lost 15-8.

Aron Szilagyi went on to claim the silver medal, losing 15-12 in the final to Aldo Montano (ITA).  Kamil Ibragimov (RUS) and Junghwan Kim (KOR) settled for the bronze medals.

In the team event, Great Britain beat Turkey 45-41 in the round of 32 before losing 45-31 to Germany.  The team went on to lose 45-41 to Ukraine before beating Hong Kong 45-31 and then losing 45-43 to China – finishing in fourteenth place.  Hungary beat Romania 45-44 to take the gold medal as Korea picked up the bronze medal by beating Germany 45-21.

Senior Women’s Sabre – Athens World Cup

Four British fencers took part in the individual event in Greece at the weekend, lining up in a field of one hundred and eighty-seven.  Maria Chart (V2D4) and Katherine Kempe (V4D2) made the first round cut but Aliya Itzkowitz (V1D4) and Jennifer Sancroft (V1D5) did not.  Both Chart and Kempe were eliminated in the first of two preliminary knockout fights, 15-7 by Rifkiss (FRA) and 15-11 by Pundyk (UKR), respectively.  Mariel Zagunis (USA) took the title beating Sofya Velikaya (RUS) 15-11 in the final as Ekaterina Dyachenko (RUS) and Ibtihaj Muhammad (USA) settled for the bronze medals.

Great Britain did not take part in the team event which was won by Ukraine who edged Russia 45-44 in a typically close gold medal match.  France beat the USA by the same score to secure the bronze medal.

GB individual placings:  Kempe 106^th, Chart 147^th, Itzkowitz 151^st & Sancroft 167^th.

Under-23 Women’s Epee – Busto Arsizio European Circuit

The field of one hundred and fifty-three at this Italian event included four from Great Britain.  Elisabeth Powell (V4D2) progressed through the first round but Sadie Greetham (V0D6), Alix Turley (V1D4) and Rebecca Wakefield (V0D6) did not.  Powell went on to beat Maschera (ITA) 15-7 in the round of 128 before losing 15-12 to Di Loreto (ITA) in the next round.

Dora Kiskapusi (ESP) beat Yulia Lichagina (RUS) 11-8 in the final as Italy’s Nicole Foietta and Giorgia Pometti took home the bronze medals.

Junior Men’s Epee – Riga

James Odgers was Britain’s sole representative in Latvia this weekend and competed in a field of one hundred and forty-seven.  Winning two of his six first round matches ensured that he qualified for the round of 128.  He went on to beat Weber (SUI) 15-13 before losing 15-14 to Slater (IRL).  Alexey Rassolov (RUS) beat Lukas Puchacher (AUT) 15-14 to take the gold medal whilst Andric Pianfetti (FRA) & Gregory Rebus (FRA) secured the bronze medals.

Junior Women’s Epee – Burgos

One hundred and sixty-seven fencers competed in this event in Spain over the weekend including nine from Great Britain.  Elsa Phillipson and Bethan Plant did not do enough to progress through the first round and were followed out of the event by Jessica Gundry, Medora McCarthy, Hannah Nesbitt and Georgia Summers in the round of 128.  Kerenza Bryson, Danielle Lawson and Lydia Stanier all made the round of 64 but lost 15-8 to Tredut-Goesser (GER), 15-6 to Brovko (UKR) and 15-14 to Meszaros (GER), respectively.

Daria Filina (RUS) beat Alexandra Louis Marie (FRA) 15-11 in the final to take the title.  Alice Clerici (ITA) and Farrah Lee-Elabd (USA) picked up the bronze medals.

In the team event Great Britain lost 45-37 to Austria in the round of 32.  Italy beat Egypt 45-33 to secure the gold medal and Russia beat the USA 45-27 to take the bronze.

Junior Men’s Foil – Aix-en-Provence

Eleven British fencers took part in this French event amongst a field of one hundred and sixty-one.  Kieran De Lange and Samuel Finch failed to do enough to progress through the first round.  Ben Bates, Harry Bird, Stephen Brown, Dominic De Almeida, Daniel Kiss, Alex Lloy, Kamal Minott and Rajan Rai all lost in the round of 128.  Jai Birch made the round of 64 but lost 15-4 to Berg (DEN), ending British interest in the event.

Kenta Suzumura (JPN) took the title, beating George Haglund (USA) in the gold medal match.  Ryohei Noguchi (JPN) and Alexandre Sido (FRA) picked up the bronze medals.

In the team event, Great Britain beat Latvia 45-30 in the round of 16 before losing to the USA 45-27 in the quarterfinals.  Italy beat Russia 45-33 to take the title and the USA beat France 45-32 for the bronze medal.

Junior Women’s Foil – Zagreb

There were five British fencers amongst the one hundred and forty-four competing in the individual event in Croatia at the weekend.  Kayleigh De Lange and Jade Rowland did not progress through the first round whilst Kate Beardmore, Katie Smith and Lucy Taylor did but were all eliminated in the round of 128.  Flora Pasztor (HUN) beat Adelya Abrakhmanova (RUS) 15-14 to win the event.  Malina Claugareanu (ROU) and Marta Martyanova (RUS) settled for the bronze medals.

In the team event Great Britain lost 44-32 to France in the round of sixteen.  In the first placings match, the team had a bye but then lost 45-39 to Ukraine and 45-34 to Spain to finish twelfth.  Poland beat the USA 45-35 to win the competition and Russia beat Japan 45-22 for the bronze medal.

GB placings:  Taylor 87^th, Beardmore 96, Smith 110^th, Rowland 116^th & De Lange 133^rd.
