Men’s Sabre – Warsaw World Cup
Six British fencers were amongst the field of one hundred and seventy-five in Warsaw at the weekend. James Honeybone progressed the furthest in the event by making the second preliminary knockout. He followed up four first round victories from six fights by beating Novikau (BLR) 15-13 but then lost 15-12 to Lambert (FRA). Kirk Slankard, Curtis Miller, Jonathan Webb and Ethan Ren were all eliminated in the first preliminary knockout but Soji Aiyenuro did not make the first round cut. Kim Junghwan (KOR) won the tournament beating Aron Szilagyi (HUN) in the final. Csanad Gemesi (HUN) and Gu Bongil (KOR) were the bronze medallists.
Soji Aiyenuro, Curtis Miller, Kirk Slankard and Jonathan Webb lined up for Great Britain in the team event which featured twenty-two countries. They were eliminated in the round of 32 by Belgium who won 45-37. Romania won the event by beating Italy in the final as Korea beat Hungary to the bronze medal.
