Lisburn Gladiators Fencing Club’s Kiara Kennedy, Alastair McIlwee, Laurence Slater, Philip Slater, Felix Yim, Alison Slater and Felicity McKee were successfully nominated to run the torch relay last month as a reward for their volunteering with Goldmark. GoldMark is a dynamic programme aimed at promoting and recognising 14-24 year olds for volunteering in sport.
They volunteered at the European Fencing Championships in Sheffield, the British Transplant Games and the Boccia World Cup in Belfast in the Summer of 2011, all of which amounted to sum 350 hours of volunteering. This has been in addition to all the time they give up to promote and develop fencing in clubs, schools, scout and church groups across Northern Ireland.
