North American Cup, Division 1 Men’s Foil, Columbus, USA. Marcus Mepstead claimed a gold medal victory in the second North American Cup, in a field including six athletes who competed at the Tokyo “2020” Olympic Games this summer.
Mepstead scored the individual men’s gold against USA’s Marcello Olivares (2021 NCAA Men’s Foil Champion), 15-7, after defeating current world number 2, USA’s Gerek Meinhardt, 15-9, in the semifinal round.
To get to the medal rounds, Mepstead beat former junior world bronze medalist, Sidarth Kumbla, 15-9, and recent Lezno Junior World Cup winner, Chase Emmer, 15-11, in the quarterfinals and round of 16 respectively.
With 215 athletes competing, Mepstead was followed by Kristjan Archer who placed 17th. While just a practice tournament for the two Brits, the competitive field and strong result mark a positive start to the 21/22 season ahead of the first men’s foil World Cup in Paris, France on the 14-16th January 2022.
