Level 3 & 4 Referee Exams – Criteria for Assessment Competitions
Criteria
- The competition must be of a minimum standard where at least 5 of the top 10 fencers in the cadet rankings are entered. Competitions with an equivalent strength of junior and/or senior fencers are entered are acceptable.
- The competition should have an entry greater than 32 competitors
- The competition organiser is required to provide a software log of the referees allocated to matches. Failure to provide this information will result in the competition being ineligible for the practical referee assessment. Suggested software would include the use of Engarde Smart
- This completed excel (or similar) spreadsheet is to be submitted by email to the British Fencing Referee manager
- The competition organiser should ensure that there is a “Head Referee” in place for the duration of the event, this is likely to also be the referee lead examiner for the competition.
- The referee examiners fee is to be covered by the competition or Home Nation

The Home Nations may choose to hold an annual Level 3 Theory Exam to which all candidates would be invited. The Home Nations would cover the expenses of all examiner’s as per the British Fencing Expenses Policy
