For the second year running the British fencing National Academy team ran a hugely successful pre-season training camp with 90 fencers benefitting from expert tuition in all aspects of elite performance. The camp ran 7th-13th August at Nottingham Trent University.
The focus of the camp was “movement”; learning to move not just as fencers but also as athletes. Central to ensuring that both athletes and coaches had a better understanding of how a high performance athlete needs to move and train was the Strength & Conditioning training delivered by an expert team of coaches from Middlesex University, led by Anthony Turner.
Later in the week, the group were inspired by skills sessions and talks from Martin Stamper, 2011 World Taekwondo Bronze medallist and Dave Alloway, GB Boxing’s Podium Coach. Both discussed the merits of specific training drills and skills which target improved foot and body movement.
Commenting on the programme, Alan Rapley, National Academy Manager, said, “The ultimate aim of the programme is to win medals at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. Enrolment in the National Academy Programme is the beginning of the journey to British world domination.”
Piers Martin, Chief Executive, added, “The National Academy is a long term holistic project and very much at the heart of the future of our elite programme. It is so pleasing to hear the positive feedback from athletes, coaches and parents alike so early on in the process. Alan Rapley and his team are already surpassing all expectations.”
