NEW U14 BF COMPETITION & RANKING STRUCTURE

A new BF competition and ranking structure for U14 members is being launched to support age appropriate pathway development and encourage fun and learning, with a new U14 ranking competition scheduled for 13-14 July 2024.

[Last updated: 16/05/24]

U14s make up around a quarter of our members, and participation in U14 competitions – both domestic and international – is increasing.

The European Fencing Confederation recently launched its own U14 competition and ranking structure, reflecting the growing participation and desire to support fencing in the younger age category across Europe.

In building an U14 competition and ranking structure we recognise the roles for British Fencing, the Home Nations associations, regions and clubs in supporting age-appropriate development and learning alongside nurturing love for the sport, and most importantly creating fun experiences for young people to engage in fencing.

Objectives

In delivering the BF U14 competition and ranking structure, BF’s objectives include:

  • Promoting the fun of competing in youth competitions in a safe environment.
  • Providing localised competition experiences.
  • Preparing fencers to transition to the U17 age group better.
  • Encouraging positive behaviours and the development of resilience at an early age.
  • Championing fair and inclusive competition experiences.
  • Supporting existing youth competitions already delivers an excellent event for these age groups.
  • Standardising best practices for competition organisers and, coaches and supporters.

U14 Ranking

The ranking scheme shall be based on the existing structure for the Cadets (U17) and Juniors (U20). Current information on these ranking schemes can be found here: Ranking schemes.

Detailed information on the U14 scheme will follow with the usual consultation opportunities.
