Olympic gold medal winner, the late Gillian Donaldson (née Sheen) MBE gave an in-depth interview with her great-nephew in early 2021, where she shared her Olympic memories and her life beyond the piste.
As Marcus Mepstead prepares to compete at his second Olympics in Tokyo, we look back at some of the Olympians who have represented GB throughout the years. A full list of GB’s fencing Olympians can be found in the BF Olympic Zone.
The only fencer (so far!) to have won a gold medal is Gillian Donaldson (nee Sheen) in Melbourne, 1956. Gillian was awarded an MBE in 2019. Gillian passed away in July 2021 and the announcement and a link to her full obituary published in The Guardian can be found here.
Gillian spoke to her great-nephew Ben Nichols on his podcast ‘Athletes: The Other Side’ in April 2021 and with kind permission, we are sharing what is thought to be her last interview, ‘A Trans-Atlantic Tale with Gill Donaldson’.
