West Yorkshire Scout leaders take part in BF online refresher session to support online and face to face delivery.
In November 2020, with the support of Helen Solly and Rob Bruniges, BF delivered an online refresher session for a group of Scout leaders from West Yorkshire, to ensure they were equipped with the tools and confidence to run fun and engaging sessions during these challenging times. West Yorkshire Scouts have been delivering fencing for a number of years, upskilling Scout leaders to deliver across the many groups in the District, as well as giving Explorer Scouts the opportunity to take part in BF’s Leadership in Fencing Award.
Armed with wooden spoons and a pair of socks, the Scout leaders were shown fun and engaging games that could be delivered both online and face to face, with and without equipment dependent on the location of delivery. The leaders embraced the session, throwing themselves into it, using Rob’s and Helen’s experience to anwser any questions they might have.
Elaine Clough, Deputy County Commissioner for West Yorkshire Scouts said, “Upskilling our Fencing instructors on Zoom! This was certainly the best Zoom of the year so far for us – exciting, motivational and fun. We just love the relationship and support we have from British Fencing and for all the Scouts in West Yorkshire, this now makes Fencing a new sport accessible to all.”
Virginia Bailey, Head of Participation at BF said, “One of the many brilliant things about Scout leaders across the country is their positivity and drive to ensure that they are providing a range of exciting and engaging opportunities for the tens of thousands of young people they support.”
