Sabre Season Begins in Venezuela

The Men’s Sabre World Cup scheduled to take place this weekend in Dakar, Senegal was cancelled.  So all eyes were on the Women’s Sabre World Cup on Margarita Island, Venezuela.

The first event of the season on the women’s sabre calendar did not include any British competitors in a field of ninety-four.  It was Sofya Velikaia (RUS) who took the gold medal beating Charlotte Lembach (GER) 15-14 in a thrilling final.  Aleksandra Socha (POL) and Mariel Zagunis (USA) came away with bronze medals.

In the team event, the USA beat Russia to gold with a 45-40 victory as France edged Italy 45-42 to the bronze medal.

The season continues this weekend with a Men’s Foil World Cup in Tokyo and a Women’s Foil World Cup in St. Maur.
