This information is intended to give clarity to the criteria and process followed by British Fencing in selecting the fencers who are nominated for a SportsAid grant.

Firstly it is important that any fencer aiming to apply for a grant should have a look at the SportsAid website – www.sportsaid.org.uk – which details the criteria and level of results required.   You should note that fencers should be competing successfully at national and international level.

British Fencing are offered an annual National allocation from SportsAid and for 2012-13 we can nominate 36 fencers.   We will select the top 4 fencers for each weapon by the cadet rankings as at 1^st Sept 2012, then the top 2 fencers born in 1995 on the junior rankings at the same date.

The grants range from £500 upwards depending on the funding sponsor, and fencers cannot initiate the applications themselves.  

Nominated fencers will receive an on-line application form from SportsAid, and must complete this in full by the deadline on the form.   Results submitted should reflect achievements at national and international level.   The grants can be used to fund any normal competitive activity, such as training, travel, equipment etc.

In addition to the 36 National grant nominations British Fencing compile a list of ‘Extras’, again taken from the cadet rankings but also in some circumstances including fencers who are 1 year out of cadets; if additional funding is available from SportsAid, these fencers will be invited to apply online.
