FIE issue updated Tokyo Games Qualification System

Following the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games to 2021, the FIE has issued the updated qualification system, as approved by the FIE Executive Committee and the International Olympic Committee.

The only changes to the document are the modification of the dates in line with the previous communications of the FIE.

These updated dates include:

5 April 2021 Closure of rolling FIE Official Ranking

15-30 April 2021 Zone qualifying events

The FIE has also confirmed in the accompanying information letter that “Results and qualifications obtained until March 2020 are retained. The rankings are “frozen” as of March 8, 2020 and will be reactivated (on a date yet to be determined) when we will be able to hold the last competitions counting for the Olympic qualification mentioned in the urgent letter 2-20″.

An overview of all of the revised dates and information provided above can be seen on the last page of the qualification system.

There is no update yet on the rescheduling of the final competitions which will count for Olympic qualifications.

Until there is more clarity over the FIE international circuit events in the months leading up to the Zonal qualifying events BF will not be able to issue an updated Zonal selection document. There will be the opportunity for formal athlete consultation, however GBR athletes and their coaches are welcome at any time to send any views that you may have directly to [email protected] with the subject ‘Zonal Selection Policy’ cc’ing [email protected].

In the meantime we continue to encourage all our athletes, their families and support teams to please look after both your physical and mental well being to be as ready as possible for a return to sparring and competition to maximise qualification chances for the Tokyo Games.

This challenging and unsettling lockdown period will inevitably pass and together we will continue to work with you to find every opportunity to maximise your international performances and support your qualification journeys to Tokyo.
