Following a consultation which ran from 4th to the 20th September, the BF Board has approved the U23 European Championships Selection Policy:
GBR U23 Euros Selection Policy 2019-20 – v1.0 Approved 7th October 2019
Following the consultation on the Under 23 European Championships Selection Policy, BF received pieces of feedback from two coaches, one parent and two athletes. Feedback was specifically requested from the Senior Athlete Panel, Athlete Development Programme Lead Coaches, in addition to the online public consultation.
BF would like to thank all those who took the time to submit feedback.
The response to questions raised as part of the consultation are below:
“Will the U23 National Championships be included as part of the procedure for selection?”
Yes, as per section 4. Eligibility Criteria, point 6. Entry into the relevant (i.e. U23) national championships is a factor for selection for the Under 23 European Championships.
“…four places should be taken into consideration at all times, rather than just three as stated”
The intention will be to take four athletes where possible. The reasoning behind having the fourth spot as discretionary is to allow for the rewarding of exceptional performances (for example a medal winning performance at Junior European/World Championships) not covered by points 11 and 12 of the Principles for Selection.
“Are you expecting the fencers to go to the circuit events to obtain a u23 European ranking off their own back or will you be selecting a squad and inviting them to accept places as for junior and senior competitions?”
There is no intention to select squads of athletes to compete at Under 23 European Circuit events. This means that any responsibility for providing referees will be on the competing athletes.
