UK Sport has today given another boost to British Fencing’s Performance Programme by increasing their existing grant by £207,517 over the next two years.  In addition, they have confirmed the previously awarded funding for the next two years moving fencing away from being a ‘one year funded’ sport.

During the Annual Investment Review, British Fencing made a case to UK Sport to have the existing funding confirmed for the remainder of the Olympic cycle and for additional programme support.  In considering this request, UK Sport noted the progress that has been made in the performance structure of the Programme alongside improved athlete performances.

The additional programme award of £207,517 over the next two years includes £44,709 for athlete programme costs, £139,500 towards sport specific costs and £23,308 increase in athlete performance awards budget.

Significantly, UK Sport have also recognised that fencing have an athlete that can medal in Rio and as a result have promoted James Davis to a Podium place within the Fencing World Class Programme.

On hearing of the award Georgina Usher, CEO said “This news is a real vote of confidence from UK Sport in our World Class Programme.  The Performance Director, Alex Newton and her team have demonstrated an impressive commitment to delivering year on year improvements to the programme giving our athletes the platform for future Olympic success.”

Alex Newton, Performance Director said “We are delighted that UK Sport have recognised the work we have been doing over the last few years to put in place a sustainable performance programme for fencing.  I would like to pay tribute to all the athletes and the whole Performance Team for their hard work in getting us this far in such a short space of time.  I would also like to congratulate James Davis on becoming our first ‘Podium funded athlete’.  This is great news for James, the World Class Programme and fencing as a whole.”
