UNIVERSITY FENCING AT MIDLANDS BUCS REGIONAL EVENT 2024

On Saturday 16th November, fencers across the Midlands took part in the BUCS Regional Series event held in Nottingham.

Fencers from universities across the Midlands took to the David Ross Sports Centre in Nottingham for the latest event as part of the BUCS Regional Fencing Series.

The series, run by BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) in partnership with BF, aims to give students a fun and supportive gateway into competitive fencing. The individual format of the events also allows students to experience fencing outside of traditional BUCS matches, which take place in an Italian team relay format.

Although designed predominantly as an introduction to competition, the Regional Fencing Series offers those with more experience the opportunity to take part. Like all events in the series, the Midlands event featured three categories: Beginner, Novice and Open.

Began in 2019-20, the BUCS Regional Fencing Series continues to grow, with 74 fencers entering this year’s Midlands event.

We’d like to thank Jack Courtney and Kristian Jackson, BUCS Regional Competitions and Event Coordinator, for running the event, as well as the fencers who volunteered as referees.

The BUCS Regional Series is a great opportunity to gain more refereeing experience at a low-pressure competition. For some, it may be their first time refereeing at an event, preparing them for the practical element of the Level 2 refereeing qualification.

If you’re interested in volunteering as a referee or learning more about the BUCS Regional Series more generally, please contact Kristian via [email protected].

The next events in the BUCS Regional Series will be in the North East & Yorkshire this Saturday, as well as the day after in the North West.

The South East & London event will be taking place on the 2nd February 2025, and the South West event on the 9th February. Entries will open on the 2nd December 2024, so watch this space.
