Pathway Development Explained

Work continues on the establishment of a talent identification and development process for young fencers with a desire to become world-beaters.  Since her appointment in May 2013, Joanna Cook has overseen the running of three talent identification and assessment days which has resulted in twenty eight athletes joining the Talent Programme.

Cook has also overseen the appointment of three Lead Talent Coaches, Neale Thomas (epee), Ian Williams (sabre) and Maciej Wojtkowiak (foil) who have already begun working with their young charges.

As part of the continued development of work in this area a dedicated section of the British Fencing website has been launched here.  This section is designed not only as a resource for the fencers involved in the programme but also to provide information about our Pathway Development for the entire fencing community and other interested parties.

A brief video highlighting our work in this area can be found here.

Speaking about the programme, Cook said; “We’ve come a long way in six months and the building blocks of a sustainable talent identification and development programme are now in place.  We can now get to work on creating world fencing champions for the future.”
